My two cents is that michael — despite being the world’s number one pop idol — had low self esteem (do what you want to me because i can always do worse to myself) but the kid was the actual Idol (like the golden Idol in Indiana Jones) that represented the innocence and play that made all the heartache of navigating through this poisonous world worthwhile. An externalization of Michael’s lost sense of self worth and self love. The heart of his heart. And he would do (did do?) anything to protect that.
